Electric GuitarCoach does exactly what it says on the box: it introduces electric guitar techniques–riffs, soloing and chord positions–and gives a graded series of lessons that build towards playing a selection of popular songs that include Black Sabbath’s old warhorse “Paranoid” and the Bryan Adams’ “Run to You”. The easy-to-use interface will be familiar to anyone who has used the acoustic GuitarCoach, as will the on-screen tabulature and video clips that show both right and left hand positions. As with its acoustic counterpart, this is a real improvement on the many instructional videos on the market. But for the absolute beginner it should be seen as a supplement to learning with a good teacher, not as a substitute.–Mark Walker

Problems Running Under Win XP
I’m just learning to play so as yet cannot comment on the quality of the coaching in this software.
What I can comment on is the dreadful problems I had getting it to run under Windows XP. It installed no problem. You then need to have the disc in the drive to run it. I clicked on the icon and got an almost endles variety of error messages. It would not run. It froze XP almost every time forcing a re-start. I’m a very experienced computer user, but nothing I tried worked. I even tried it on a completely fresh XP install with no other apps installed, it still wouldn’t run. I called the tech support line and they were unable to provide an answer. Apart from the usual lame, “we don’t have a clue - so it may be a virus” excuse. My system more than met the minimum requirements and is clean and virus free. I eventually solved the problem by mounting an image of the disc on a virtual CD Drive on the hard drive. It now runs perfectly. But no way would it run from my CD or DVD hardware drives as it’s supposed to.
One thing to note, this is old style 16 bit software! It even talks about running it under Windows 3.1 in the leaflet!!!
I only hope it helps me learn to play better than it runs “from the box”.
I’m also still waiting, a week on, for the promised return call from their tech support.
I hope you don’t experience the problems I did, but if you do I hope my solution will be of help.

Electric Guitar Coach
This software is EXCELLENT!

After hours of searching the internet looking for some good guitar software ive finally found it.

There are 5 Different levels of difficulty to tackle which will leave you sitting at my cumputer actually “Playing” for hours not wanting to put your guitar down. Popular songs with Video makes things so much easier. You can even play at half tempo until you get used to playing and then play at full tempo.

With nice easy to follow lessens in sections anyone will be able to follow and make quick progress with this program!

I cant say enough good things about it, my playing has come on really well and quickly i cant wait to complete it and get Intermediate Guitar Coach.

Fantastic
I was too embarassed to go and have guitar lessons because I was an absolute beginer - this program has been brilliant - after only two weeks I feel confident enough to go into guitar shops and try out guitars (very intimidating normally)

Recomended to anyone who wants to learn, very very good at what it does. The interface is a bit dated but - hell if you have a guitar in your hands who cares :D

easy, friendly and effective
Both me and my son have been cracking on through these brilliant guitar lessons. I hadn’t picked up a guitar in years and my son is new to guitar, but we’re both happily strumming away now and getting better day on day.

For the hours of fun this has given us it is a bargain.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant!
I first saw this product in WH Smiths and was impressed by the awards and endorsements listed on the box (PC Format Gold award, Computer Active ***** Buy it Award and an endorsement from the Royal College of Music). I had recently bought a guitar and wasn’t aware that there was such a thing as guitar software! After a little reserach into other products, I decided to go with Guitar Coach on the basis of the endorsements and I certainly made the right decision! It’s a well structured course for beginners and uses in-depth video, real audio and detailed instruction to great effect. It’s also great fun and I’d highly recommend it to any aspiring players.

Guitar Coach haphazard
I was disappointed in Guitar Coach’s haphazard lessons. The basics are not covered well and it is more a collection of assorted material than a teaching method.
Had a much better experience with the lessons in Emedia Guitar Method which progressed gradually and I could follow along with successfully. Guitar Method also has an automatic tuner and an animated fretboard that makes it easier to watch and learn the fingerings for songs.

Excellent Recording Package!
This is without a doubt one of the best recording software packages available.
Very intuitive and very easy to use. you can be recording in no time.
Using the drum and bass loops provided it is very easy to lay down a backing track and to add your guitar playing.
It is amazing.
The loops provided are MAINLY funk orientated so you will need to purchase some other loop cds at a later date. (if you are into rock, like me!)
Check out this link for my first attempt (mistakes inc.) with Cakewalk Guitar Tracks Pro v3 (with a crappy soundcard)http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/mikemaley_music.htm

Most places are selling this at £99 - £139 so do yourself a favour and get this while you can.
It records audio only (for midi you will need Sonar or Cubase) but for a very simple yet professional package this is a must for any guitarist.
You can get better sound quality by having a better soundcard but even if you have a basic sound card you can get very good results.
Comes with IKMultimedia’s AMPLITUBE plugin plus loads of other effects to spice up your recording (those of you with Pods or V-Amps will probably want use your amp modelers for your guitar tones)
Well worth considering for an easy introduction to the world of digital recording.

Simple to use but sounds fabulous
This is definitely one of the easiest pieces of software I’ve ever used. I’ve been knocking out tracks on an old multi track tape deck for years, and this has all the ease of tape - but once you’ve recorded you can cut and paste too! The screen looks like a hardware mixer so it’s easy to get head around and the effects work just like pedals and sound great. I would say this is great for old rockers like me, and anyone new to making sounds on their computer. The kids are starting to use it to record themselves singing along to CDs and reading bits of books and jokes, just like we used to do with old tape recorders, except this stuff sounds really good! We sent a CD to grandparents in Australia this Christmas which earned us major Brownie points.

If you play an instrument for fun, and don’t have a PHD in computers you should buy this software. I’m recommending it to all my friends, which should tell you something!

another easy, fun set of lessons
This is my second brilliant experience with Charanga guitar lessons. Me and my son worked our way through Guitar Coach and loved every minute. We were both thrilled when we found out that this next set of lessons was available. We’ve only just made a start but the quality seems just as high as in the first installment. People who are already fairly good with their playing could probably skip the first package and jump straight into this one.

Excellent fun and a bargain compared to ‘real’ lessons. I recommend it highly.

Disappointing
I bought a copy of Guitar Coach Intermediate as a present after learning the basics of Guitar. I found the software very interesting but was disappointed with the content when my friend showed me similar software he had purchased by a different company. eMedia’s Intermediate Guitar Method has over 50 songs contained in 170 lessons and includes loads of cool features like an automatic tuner, anumated fretboard, recorder, chord dictionary etc.

I feel that, at the same price, Charranga’s product is much more inferior to eMedia’s.

You Can Play 1/2 Dozen Chords - But Now Your’e Stuck . . .
. . then this might be exactly what you’re after. I’d been playing for about a year - but my strumming was in a bit of “she’ll-be-comin-round-the mountain” sort of a rut. Everything sounded the same. I needed new strumming patterns and a few embellishments - and help putting these together in some recognisable songs. Intermediate Guitar Coach was superb - very easy to get into, very useful facilities (slow down the video - set up loops for practice, chord boxes highlighted as you play etc). Extremely slick and professional product - and you end up playing decent sounding music (inc. contemporary stuff eg. Radiohead). I’ve tried DVD’s and those books with CD’s included - but this is the best product I have used to date. 20+ great guitar lessons in a box - so they work out at about a quid each - you cannot go wrong with this product.

Poor for beginner
Give it a miss! As a complete beginner I found that Guitar Method doesn’t teach the fundamental skills that you need to become a guitar player and (almost as bad) it’s really boring!

No appreciation of the beginner

Must have for budding guitarists
This program offers a very comprehensive approach to learning guitar. A typical lesson includes a close up video of a guitar skill followed by a song or two to practice. The progression is very logical and easy to follow. As the songs get more challenging, there are some great features like the ability to slow the song down or loop sections of the song.

I have looked at other software, such as Charranga and I must say that it is no where near as comprehesive and the lesson content and song content do not touch eMedia. The additional featurea in eMedia’s software, such as the Automatic Tuner, Animated Fretboard, Recorder, Chord Dictionary and Scale Directory are invaluable.

I would definitely recommend eMedia to anyone looking to learn Guitar.
